A Few What-Ifs About Beliefs and Belonging
What if…
…the people I trust most suddenly adopted the opposite ideology?
Would I still trust them?
Would I question my own stance, or distance myself?
…the ideology I hold was shown, through solid evidence, to cause harm in ways I hadn’t seen?
Would I defend it, deny the evidence, or start letting go?
…I spent a year in a community where my ideology was in the minority?
How would that change my sense of self?
Would I adapt to fit in, or double down to stand out?
…my ideology became mainstream and socially dominant?
Would I feel safer, or more suspicious of power?
Would I hold it to higher moral standards?
…I discovered that my attachment to the ideology is more about belonging than about "truth"?
Would I still hold onto it?
What would I be afraid of losing?
…I could no longer use labels like “left,” “right,” “progressive,” “conservative,” or others?
How would I describe my beliefs without shorthand?
Would they become more nuanced or harder to explain?
